Difficulties

Since the redux update, Chippy's two official campaigns each have two alternative difficulty levels: an Easy mode for those unable to progress through the normal game, and a Nightmare mode for those up to any challenge.

Easy Mode

Easy Mode, unlocked after dying ten times in the official game, consists of easier versions of the normal stages. It provides the following changes:

Player

  • Players start with two Shields instead of one.
  • Player guns deal 10% more damage to pixels, and 26.5% more damage to parts.
  • Bullet and pixel collision is more lenient.
  • Co-op respawn pods spawn a second earlier.

Enemies

  • Enemies' attacks are less frequent, and bullets are smaller, slower, and less numerous.
  • Some bosses have more explosive pixels for players to ignite.
  • Time bombs are absent.

Powerups

  • Some powerups come in larger numbers, or are replaced with more basic ones.
  • Some powerups are more effective, and many slow the flow of time more strongly.
  • Cursed powerups are absent.

Miscellaneous

  • Each player has a bow on their ship.
  • Bosses are described as weaker and/or friendlier.
  • Speedruns use double the total medal times, making them easier to achieve for players who make frequent mistakes.

Nightmare Mode

Nightmare Mode is a brutally difficult revamp of the campaigns. The following changes are present:

Player

  • Players start with no Shields.
  • Player guns deal 10% less damage to parts.
  • Bullet and pixel collision is less lenient.
  • Co-op respawn pods take an extra second to spawn.

Enemies

  • Enemy pixels have more HP.
  • Enemies' attacks are more frequent, and bullets are larger, faster, and more numerous.
  • Each boss borrows certain attacks from other Nightmare bosses, usually using separate timers to pause their normal patterns for the borrowed attacks.
  • Some enemy pixels are changed into new armors.

Powerups

  • Some powerups come in smaller numbers, or are replaced with more advanced ones.
  • Some powerups are less effective, and many slow the flow of time more weakly.
  • Cursed powerups move towards players, who are eventually forced to collect them and take on the respective curse.

Miscellaneous

  • Each player ship has a cracked hull and a small, reddish eye.
  • Bosses have new color schemes.
  • Bosses are described as stronger and/or unfriendlier.
  • Each soundtrack is replaced with a new version.
  • Speedruns use the total medal times without increasing them. The official Nightmare speedruns demand consistent success in consecutive Nightmare stages, making them the ultimate tests of players' skill!

Trivia

  • The bow on each Easy mode player is a reference to the easiest difficulty level in the platform hell game I Wanna Be the Guy.
  • Alternative color schemes were planned for Easy mode, but they were scrapped due to the difficulty level being intended as an alternative to the normal difficulty.
  • Most official difficulty changes are implemented via diffInt-dependent values in the game's code. Thus, the difficulty variable in stage files is enough to make the majority of the changes in official stages.
