Powerups

Powerups are tools dropped by bosses that aid the player in various ways. They show up in pairs; from each, only one can be chosen. Powerups can appear in different numbers, and are color-coded for different offensive and/or defensive purposes.

Most offensive and defensive items are capped at either 3 or 9, to discourage powerup hoarding and encourage strategic use.

The game's code refers to these as status effects. These are traditionally used to count items and effects, but alternate uses can be implemented in fanmade stages.

Items

All diamond-shaped powerups are active items that the player can manually trigger. These can unleash a strong attack (e.g. Cannon, Barrage), imbue a helpful effect (e.g. Double Gun, Slowmo), or manipulate one's environment to protect them (e.g. Repel, Freeze, Erase).

Pickups

Collectable circles are passive pickups whose effects occur automatically. The two most common are Damage and Shield.

Effects

All lasting impacts on the player and/or game are effects, most of which can be read in the pause menu. Some effects are gained with powerups, but others are enemy-inflicted hindrances.
